Drinks From The Source Of Wisdom

EXPLORE BY CATEGORY

Who was your most influential teacher? Why?

While there have no doubt been some great people that have taught me in my life, I’d still say that my greatest lessons haven’t been received from people (at least directly). My greatest teacher is more of a source that has appeared throughout multiple areas of my life. I’ll call it God. It may also be thought of as wisdom, insight, silence, nature, contemplation, reading, and life experience.

That’s a bit broad but because I believe everything is connected (not predetermined, but definitely mapped out should you listen and follow the path) the same voice that speaks to me through the written word speaks to me in the heart of nature.  The same voice that whispers wisdom to me when reflecting on a problem in my life has also shouted on a few occasions when I’ve been too stubborn to listen.

This same spirit is the one who acts through coincidental meetings with strangers who say the exact thing you were needing to hear, radio songs that seem to be playing just for you, and disappointments that turn out to be your saving grace. This is the teacher I’m speaking of.

Could some of those be just egotistical assumptions and the result of confirmation bias? Sure. But I’ve had far too many instances where I’ve learned so much from tuning into this still, small voice. And if it’s all made up in my head, I’ll keep on listening because then I’m the greatest teacher I’ve ever had!

Learning to Listen To God Speak in the Silence

The trick though is learning to pay attention and listen. Creative people might be able to relate to the ability to pull a completed song, poem, work of art, etc. seemingly out of the air, like you didn’t have to do any work on it; it was received rather than created. Well, it’s a lot like that. In our busy, noisy world, though, we have to be purposeful with our attention if we want to welcome more of these experiences into our lives.

Success! You're on the list.

Our job is to plant seeds. God’s job is to make sure they grow. And then, it’s our turn again to harvest the crop. Wisdom is usually obtained through silence, though, which means we have to give God time and space to speak into our lives.

Answers Come In God’s Time, Not Ours

Oh, and just because God makes sure those seeds grow doesn’t mean they grow on our time. We have to keep planting and keep watering daily because we never know when it’s time to harvest. It usually comes when we least expect it.

So spend more time in nature. Spend more time in silent reflection. Spend more time examining your life and asking for guidance. Spend time asking what this hardship is meant to teach you. You might be shocked by the answers you receive and where they come from.
