Whether you have ADHD or not, how do you find room for silence in a noisy world?

A Neurodivergent Poem About Silence—Modern Life is Too Loud and Overstimulating!

No Room For Silence

There's no room for silence
in this modern world that can't keep
its gargantuan mouth closed
anywhere across the globe.
The noxious clanging from society
that can't quit banging on metal garbage cans
rattle meditative thoughts from the mind
and insights we'd just caught in the ether
flit out the holes in our net,
like butterflies escaping torn mesh,
and we're left with only melancholy
and a memory that's only able to forget.

A memory that no longer
has the capacity to function
in this updated system where stimuli
comes faster than our outdated processors
can take action on.
Our RAM and CPU at 100% usage.
Our hard drive full.
And our time has no space
to delete all the unnecessary files,
uninstall all the unused apps,
and clear out our cache.

If there's no room for silence,
why does it feel like
this chaotic world keeps growing louder
and is always able to find space
for more noise,
for more demands,
for more distractions
that break up our attention
that's already divided?

An ADHD poem about modern life being too loud and too busy

Modern Life Keeps Getting Louder and More Busy—Where Do We Find Silence?

While there’s many good things that have been added to society from advances in technology, one benefit that’s been removed is silence. The busyness of life, the constant noise that reverberates from our modern world drowns out so much peace. We don’t have time to relax. We don’t have time to think because we’re constantly being distracted by all the stimuli bombarding us.

We are like overwhelmed computers trying to keep up with the unlimited demands and sort through the endless noise around us. We are all running hot, unable to cool down from the exhaustion of modern life.

The one place I’m still able to find some peace and quiet in is nature. I go there to retreat from all the noise that rattles and overstimulates my ADHD brain. I find my walks and contemplations in nature very healing. If nature is a place that refreshes you too, you’ll likely enjoy my collection of poems about nature, Nature’s Bounty (click the link below).

If you’re able to find space for silence in our busy lives, let me know where you find it in the comments!
