A Bird Poem About Nature’s Violence and Death

We often think of sparrows as harmless, cheerful songbirds. But life in a flock isn’t always peaceful. Sometimes, these small birds turn on each other with startling brutality. This haiku was inspired by the darker side of their behavior, when a group singles out one bird and attacks until nothing remains but feathers and silence. We often think of sparrows as harmless, cheerful songbirds. Sparrows flock to shrubs.
The mob hacks through feathers, bone
life's violence unveiled.

I have a large numbers of shrubs behind my house that are filled with house sparrows. It was a bit shocking the first time I saw them kill one of their own. At first I thought they were just playing with one another until I saw the bloody body. I now see it quite often. It’s always a chilling reminder of how violence isn’t limited to humans, that it essentially is a part of life.

10 Interesting Facts About Sparrows

  1. House sparrows are one of the most widespread bird species worldwide, living alongside humans in cities and rural areas.
  2. They are highly social, often feeding, roosting, and nesting in close groups.
  3. Male sparrows use chirping calls to attract mates and defend territory.
  4. These birds mainly eat seeds but can also feed on insects, especially when raising young.
  5. Despite their small size, sparrows can be aggressive in defending their nests.
  6. Sparrows are known to evict other birds from nesting holes, even larger species.
  7. Their mobbing behavior often protects against predators, but can sometimes turn inward against one of their own.
  8. Scientists suggest sparrow mob killings may occur when a weak or diseased bird is targeted by the group.
  9. Their populations have declined in parts of Europe and Asia due to habitat loss and pollution.
  10. Sparrows have long been symbols of simplicity and survival in poetry, but their true nature holds contradictions.
