Unrequited Love Poem About Missing Someone You Love

moon moonlight

Oh, how the heart aches when it’s separated from who you love–even more so after a break-up. When we go through hard times in a relationship our minds never seem to rest. We question all our past actions and words while mapping out possible ways to fix things and get back to the way we once were.

For me, sleep has always been the hardest time to handle heartbreak. I lay in bed, tossing and turning attempting to get my ex out of my mind but usually failing miserably. This is a poem I wrote about those experiences of being unable to sleep and unable to get the person you love out of your head. Sitting up in bed, looking out the window, staring at the moon, and wondering if there’s a chance they’re up thinking about the relationship as miserable being alone as me.

You can find this poem in my collection of breakup poetry titled “Thorns of Love”. Link to the book below the poem.

Across the Moonlit Miles

I can feel you across the moonlit miles that separate our windows.
And somehow I know you are out there,
Lying in bed, unable to sleep, just like me.
You are yearning for this chaos to be released
And wisped away into the cosmos.
You are wondering why love has to be this hard,
When it is so easy, believe me...
I know it to be true.
Though I've told you a thousand times,
I'm just another hopeless romantic like you,
Making the obvious a mystery,
Purposely blurring the evidence that resounds,
"Safe. True. Real."
But I wonder does the pain keep you up,
Or are you already at ease in peaceful sleep?
There are no dreams on my eyes tonight, only tears -
Empty vessels, messages in bottles I'm sending out to you.
SOS, my love. I'm sinking fast.
So won't you read quickly?
Unravel the scroll and see my soul opened wide, tears dried upon the page.
Return my plea! Can't you see that I need to be freed
From this misery, this tragedy?
This man you see is not one of the wolves
You've mistaken for sheep a thousand times over.
I am a scared, shaking lamb just like you.
Broken, bruised, blackened, and blue.
I can feel you across the moonlit miles tonight, my love.
Can you feel me too?

My current collections of poetry, all available on Amazon, all written by me, Justin Farley. A Voice in the Wilderness is a chapbook of Christian Poetry, written about the joys, doubts, struggles, and sorrows of the Christian life. Nature’s Bounty is a collection of nature poetry celebrating my love for the outdoors. And Thorns of Love is the first book of three in a series of poems about love, this one being sad, breakup poems.

I have also published two poetry collections about the seasons and mental health–each book containing half nature poems about the particular season and half mental health issues that I felt correspond with the season. The first collection I published was Frozen Rivers which is about winter and also the hardships of life and specifically living with mental illness. My latest book is Blossoms of Hope which focuses on spring and finding hope during hard times.

I write to reach the hearts of the searching, the suffering, the still fighting. I write to soothe my soul and hopefully to soothe yours too. I write to celebrate and attempt to put words to the beauty of life. Here are my published books on Amazon. More to come. A huge, humble thank you to anyone who supports my work.
