Yesterday, there was finally a break in the weather. This winter has felt so long! There hasn’t been tons of snow- just a lot of bitter, cold. I was fortunate enough to get out into the woods for hike and was inspired to write this poem about the permafrost of winter thawing and (hopefully) spring arriving.

It’s always a muddy affair, though, when the weather breaks quickly and the deep layers of soil are still frozen solid, but the topsoil is thawing and leftover snow is melting. With nowhere to drain, the ground becomes a muddy mess. I’ll take it over the harsh cold of winter! Hopefully, spring has finally arrived.
